Falun, Sweden World Cup March 17–19, 2023

March 20, 2023

The FIS introduced a new relay format on Sunday March 19th that everyone seems to like.
The skiers loved the relay and hope it will be a standard format for future races.
Two women and two men each ski 5 kilometers, two using classical style and two freestyle.
In yesterday’s race the men skiing classic went out first, handing off to the women using
classic technique. The women then tag the second man, who skis freestyle. So the women ski the crucial
last leg using freestyle technique.

Falun is known for an incredibly steep hill near the stadium. In Swedish it’s called the
mördar backen, or murder hill. US skier Ben Ogden skied the first classical leg for US Team 1
and attacked the hill with such speed that Sweden’s first leg skier, Halvarsson, said he had
never seen anyone go up the hill that fast. Unfortunately, a little too fast as after the
200 meter sprint up the steep hill he was caught. Here are the results from the relay.  -Len
